Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, Sonya began cello lessons at the age of seven under the tutelage of Irina Pavlovna Fedotova. In 1997 she moved with her family to Canada, and continued her studies privately, first in Ottawa and later at the Conservatoire de musique de Gatineau.
Sonya has participated in many music festivals, including the Domaine Forget Academy, Schlern International Music Festival (Italy), Tiberius Week (Romania), Texas Music Festival (U.S.A.), and the Orchestre de la francophonie (Canada). In 2008, she appeared with I Musici de Montréal as one of the soloists for the premiere of Paul Desenne’s Dragoncello for six celli and string orchestra. Sonya has been a member of numerous orchestras and chamber ensembles, including the Alaya String Quartet, which took first place at the National Finals of the Canadian Music Competition in 2009. She is currently a member of the New Generation Chamber Orchestra and the Diaghilev Duo (with pianist Ioulia Blinova).
Sonya was a 1st place winner at the National Finals of the Canadian Music Competition in 2011 and 2012. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in cello performance from the University of Montreal where she studied with the late Yuli Turovsky. She is currently pursuing her Master’s at the University of Houston, in the studio of Vagram Saradjian.
